I reviewed 87 movies in 2017, five less than my first full year writing this blog, but between selling and buying homes, and moving late in the year, the second half of 2017 was thin on movie watching.
Not all of the movies I reviewed were released in 2017, so that’s my one caveat for this list. My rating system remained at 0 to 5, in 0.5 increments, which still seems like I should switch it to a 0 – 10 in single digit increments, but we’ll see.
This was a successful year for my blog, with tens of thousands of reads, something I’m quite happy about. I don’t do this for money, just a genuine love of movies. I don’t do it for the sake of ego either – I’m well aware that there are thousands of people doing similar things, and I don’t much care about clickbait headlines to draw people to mine. It’s a hobby, and I enjoy it, and that’s that! Having said that, my blog has led to a number of red carpet premiere invites, one of which I actually went to, in Beverly Hills back in October. Unfortunately the movie, Cold Moon, made it into my worst list.
As in any year, there are surprise hits and disappointments. On the former, movies like A Ghost Story and Mother were better – and different! – than I expected going in, and it’s always sad to talk about movies that disappointed me, but Capture Kill Release and Star Wars: The Last Jedi were right up there. The year also had its fair share of movies that met my low expectations for one reason or another – The Shape Of Water just gave me one more reason to not trust Guillermo Del Toro’s instincts as a writer, and Trainspotting 2 for more or less proving the old adage that you can never really go back home again. None of these are good enough to make the top 10, or bad enough to make the bottom 5, incidentally. I decided to forgo last year’s top 5 by genre categories and stick to best and worst overall.
Statistically speaking, here is the spread of my ratings with each increment as a percentage of the total, in descending order:
5.0: 0%
4.5: 4.6%
4.0: 18.39%
3.5: 13.79%
3.0: 12.64%
2.5: 12.64%
2.0:12.64%
1.5: 8.05%
1.0: 10.34%
0.5: 5.75%
0.0: 1.15%
