I’ll confess to being a boring moviewatcher. I am not one of those types who can get into bad movies, nor can I ever describe a bad movie that is somehow so bad it becomes good. I just don’t have that capacity. Bad is bad. I suppose I also have a grudge against bad movies. It takes a lot of money and a lot of talented people to make a movie, and when I watch a movie that fails on the basics, I actually get angry. And I’m not talking about microbudget productions where anything that rises above competent is a success, I’m specifically talking about multiplex features. Why do these movies get made? While I’m a sucker for the Marvel movies, my personal favourite movie about superhumans is 2012’s Chronicle, a movie that appeals to the side of me that sees the crossover potential of the superhuman in fiction, and not keep it limited to the kind of material that’s been pounding the cinemas for decades now, and now Brightburn, a modestly made indie movie produced by Guardians of the Galaxy‘s James Gunn has cemented itself right by it.
Movie Review: PITCH PERFECT 3 – Almost plotless and peopled with 2D characters, this movie is a waste of their time, and yours.
Hey, I’m no movie snob. I love some independent movies, and I favour character-driven stories over soulless plot-driven crap, but I’m not THAT guy at the party who only talks about that Chechnian 30 minute short about life on a pig farm as if it was the greatest piece of cinema in history. Despite my feeling that both Captain Fantastic and A Ghost Story are going to chart really high on my 2017 Best Of list, I remain a huge fan of populist movies. Pitch Perfect 3 is not one of them.
