Movie Review: ANT MAN – boilerplate Marvel plot, elevated by Paul Rudd

Ant Man

Back from watching Ant Man, the latest offering from Marvel Studios, and like most people who’ve commented on Facebook, I enjoyed it. I thought Rudd was as engaging as he usually is, and it was a nice change to see him playing something like this instead of the sitcom rut I think he was digging into. I thought the entire cast did okay too, and with that black bob, Evangeline Lilly was scrum-diddly-umptious. Continue reading “Movie Review: ANT MAN – boilerplate Marvel plot, elevated by Paul Rudd”

Movie Review: MAGGIE – a different kind of zombie, and Ahnuld, movie, but mostly underwhelming

Maggie

Maggie, the most unusual Arnold Schwarzenegger movie since, well, ever, is something I’d strongly anticipated for the better part of a year, since first hearing about it. It’s kind of like Cop Land, that “serious” movie that Sylvester Stallone made back in 1997 – a decent try that never really did much to break him away from the action genre. Now, I don’t think that Schwarzenegger took this movie to try to carve out a new stage of his career (considering he then made Terminator: Genisys), but the end result is pretty much the same – Maggie isn’t going to give him any new credibility. Movie Review: MAD MAX: FURY ROAD – good reboot, but I don’t believe the hype.

Mad Max

Mad Max: Fury Road was on my list, but not too high up it, I must admit. Harkening back to the original trilogy, I can honestly say I wasn’t a huge fan. Liked the first a lot, thought the second one was pretty god – a real departure from the original, in terms of sequels, but wasn’t really feeling Beyond Thunderdome. When I heard Miller was returning to the franchise with Tom Hardy assuming the Gibson role, and Charlize Theron, I figured I would see it – but like I said, it wasn’t high on my hit list. Movie Review: PROJECT ALMANAC – boneheaded, cautionary time travel movie annoys more than entertains.

Project_Almanac_poster

A couple of days ago I watched an advance copy of Project Almanac, a movie I’d wanted to see for over a year, from a trailer I watched in early 2014, when the movie was originally titled “Welcome To Yesterday” -a far, far better title for this kind of movie, and as it turns out, a far, far better title than the movie deserves. Movie Review: UNDER THE SKIN – arty, fascinating sci-fi that shows Scarlett Johansson can still bring her A game.

Under the Skin

Watched Jonathan Glazer’s Under The Skin over a couple of days due to the odd times of the day I was viewing. There’s plenty of people who have written off Scarlett Johansson as an actor thanks to her big movies (Avengers: Age of Ultron) and celeb status, but she’s been great before (Ghost World, Lost In Translation) and she’s great here too.
