Movie Review: SUICIDE SQUAD – all of the bad things you’ve heard about this movie are true. One of the worst big budget comic book movies ever.

I have a lot of contempt for the stunning ineptness of how Warner Brothers handles the DC properties.  It’s nothing short of disastrous, and really, there’s no excuse for it.  When it comes to Marvel, Marvel Studios has done a more than decent job with the properties they own; since 2008’s Iron Man they’ve created a robust cinematic universe with mass appeal full of individual properties that more or less have their own clear identities.  Guardians of the Galaxy is a lot different than the Captain America franchise as that franchise is different to the Avengers franchise.  This is not an opinion over quality (I’m critical of their boilerplate plots), just a fact.

Being honest, I’m not a big fan of the X-Men movies. I can’t deny that X-Men (2000) was a real game changer for superhero movies. Good actors, a decent script that didn’t attempt to water things down too much, and a good young director in Bryan Singer – and, of course, the breakout performance of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. 2003’s X2: X-Men United, the year after Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man built on that, and paved the way for the genre being the annual cinematic staple it now is. Movie Review: CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Captain America: Civil War bears almost no resemblance to the comic book by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven from about 10 years ago, and when I heard about a cinematic attempt to do even a light adaptation of the book, I was dubious. On one hand, the Russos did tremendous work with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and that movie had almost nothing to do with any of those arcs either, but then I heard the increasing cast count for this one, and got more than just a little wary. The sign that a superhero movie like this is going to hit the skids is when the cast begins to overwhelm the archplot – but when you are ostensibly making even a light adaptation of a character-dense, universe-changing plot like Civil War, you can’t avoid a giant cast. Movie Review: BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

Just back from the critically reviled Batman v Superman, and in a nutshell, it’s either terrible or just so-so, depending on what side of the fence you’re on, where the characters are concerned. I think a percentage of moviegoers who are satisfied by spectacle are likely to feel conflicted too, because while the action is decent, it does take a long time to get there.
