Movie Review: STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI – Hard to like and badly written, this movie is more like episodes 1-3, than 4-7.

When we saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi on December 28 of this year, that day was notable for three reasons – my brother’s birthday, my wedding anniversary, and 40 years to the day I went to see the first movie in the franchise.  40 years – that’s almost half a century.  Amazing.  This was back in the day when the UK would get a movie literally months after it’s initial US release.  Over the Christmas period, and a little after, it was almost a competition to see how many times you could see it more than your friends.  I don’t recall if I beat anyone, but I went to see that movie 13 times in maybe a three week period, staying in the cinema to watch it two or three times in a row.  That won’t be happening with the latest in the franchise.

Movie Review: ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY – decent first side-story, but lacks depth and characters are weak.

This is the second year in a row where Star Wars has been the family Christmas Day movie, but I found last year’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens to be the better movie.  Yes, I know it was a highlight reel of past movies for the most part, but I’m not a fan of the franchise and I really liked it.  Rogue One: A Star Wars story fits into the series as Episode 3.5, where we finally see the mission that saw the plans for the Death Star stolen, and why exactly it was, in the end, pretty easy to destroy.  Continue reading “Movie Review: ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY – decent first side-story, but lacks depth and characters are weak.” →

Movie Review: STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS – JJ Abrams directs a Star Wars highlight reel, but the new characters are pretty great.

Just back from the worldwide cultural phenomenon that is Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the true new Star Wars movie for anyone that – like me – loathed the inept prequels. I’ve mentioned numerous times over the last couple of weeks on FB and in the real world that I’m not a Star Wars fan, and I’m really, honestly not. The Empire Strikes Back was the last one I enjoyed. Return of the Jedi was very poor, and the prequels were truly bad movies. So I go in to this one first and foremost as a fan of J J Abrams, a director I admire greatly, even if he’s worked on mediocre to just plain bad movies in the past. To me, he’s Spielberg’s natural successor in the world of genre blockbusters, and he was the perfect choice for this new wave of Star Wars movies.
