Movie Review: ENEMY

The adjective “Lynchian” gets tossed around frequently, mostly by people who like to sound like they know what they’re talking about when it comes to movie reviews.  I don’t claim to be any great film critic or expert, but I can tell you that I am a huge fan of Lynch’s work.  He’s by far and away the director whose work I seek out above all others.  I don’t even claim to have any great insights into Lynch’s work either.  His work is something I consider to be as close as you can get to art-film without sliding into total subjectivism.  Continue reading “Movie Review: ENEMY”

Movie Review: BRIDGE OF SPIES

Bridge of SpiesBridge of Spies, the latest collaboration of Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks came highly recommended from a friend of the wife, plus it has some high level Oscar nominations, including Best Picture (not that I care, just pointing out how highly regarded it is by others), so we watched it last night. Movie Review: THE REVENANT

Revenant

Just one year after the great (and apparently polarizing) Birdman, Alejandro Inarritu returns to the screen with his new offering, The Revenant, which is selling out theaters thanks to the newly revealed 2016 Oscar nominations. I’ve noticed over the last few years it’s become a trend to rip on Tarantino and his movies – I’m not exactly sure why, but I suspect it’s more contrarian than anything else. I don’t think I’ve ever claimed to dislike anything just because everyone else liked it, but whatever you gotta do to feel edgy, I suppose.

Movie Review: CRIMSON PEAK – Del Toro’s Gothic tale unconvincingly lightweight, overly reliant on CGI.

Crimson Peak

I always approach Guillermo Del Toro’s movies with some hesitation. In my opinion he’s made two absolutely terrific movies in The Devil’s Backbone and Pan’s Labyrinth, but he’s also made mediocre fare like Mimic and Hellboy, and flat out garbage like Pacific Rim and Hellboy 2. The trailers for Crimson Peak didn’t exactly set my heart fluttering either. A lot of greenscreen CGI work in a haunted house movie is an almost guarantee of bullshit, and then there’s Tom Hiddleston (Only Lovers Left Alive, High Rise).
